30 jobs go at Space4 through home market crisis
MORE than 30 jobs have been axed at the West Midlands’ “assembly line” houses plant due to the housing market crash, it was revealed today.
Workers at Space4, in Castle Bromwich, have been made redundant by crisis-hit parent group Persimmon Homes and fears are growing over the future of the factory.
The job losses are among a wave of cutbacks by Persimmon, who announced in July 100 lay-offs – marking a fifth of its workforce across the UK.
A Space4 worker, who asked not to be named, said: “Due to the extensive decline in the housebuilding market and severe cutbacks, over 30 people have been made redundant from the factory.
“Many more job losses are said to be coming, with a possible closure of the factory. The factory was producing in excess of 400 walls a week this time last year.
“However, due to poor demand in the housing market and the way in which Persimmon are not building on any new sites the factory’s output is now down to only 90 walls a week.”
Richard Latham, HR director at Persimmon Homes, confirmed job losses at Space4 but said new products were in the pipeline at the factory.
“Regrettably due to current market conditions there have been redundancies made across the Persimmon group as a whole which includes the Space4 operation.”
