Doors open across the Midlands for Heritage Open Day
HISTORY lovers were offered a peek into the past and a taste of Jewish culture as Birmingham’s oldest synagogue opened its doors to the public.
Singers Hill Synagogue allowed the public to delve into its history for free during a special event to mark English Heritage Open Day.
The open day included performances of traditional Jewish music by the Kol Kinor Choir.
Singers Hill is one of the UK’s oldest and largest Victorian synagogues. Organisers hoped visitors would learn about Jewish culture as they wondered at the architecture.
Heritage Open Days are designed to celebrate England’s architecture and culture by giving visitors free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee.
During the day, one of the West Midlands’ oldest foundries, Chamberlin & Hill Castings, in Walsall, opened its doors to offer a rare glimpse behind the scenes.
