SWIMMING superstar Eleanor Simmonds, who was born in Walsall, may be given the Freedom of the Borough, it was revealed today.

Thirteen-year-old Eleanor, who moved to Swansea last year, has won two gold medals at the Paralympics in Beijing.

Now Walsall Council chiefs are keen to hold a civic reception in her honour and give her one of the highest honours it can bestow.

Walsall Council leader Coun Tom Ansell said today: “We are all immensely proud of what Eleanor has achieved and we would love to do something for her.

“She has excelled at the Games and she deserves to be given the Freedom of the Borough,” he added.

Eleanor, a former pupil at Aldridge Science College, was born in Walsall but now competes for Swansea after moving to the area last year.

Eleanor has achondroplasia, a genetic disorder which leads to small stature.
