Five held over killing in Wolverhampton road
FIVE men were being questioned by detectives today after a 59-year-old man was deliberately mown down and killed by a car in the Midlands.
The men, aged 23, 26, 28, 30 and 32, were arrested yesterday afternoon by police probing the death of the 59-year-old.
But the driver of the vehicle is still being sought by officers investigating the tragedy.
The man was driven at following an altercation when trouble flared in the street. Police attended Banstead Close in the All Saints area of Wolverhampton in the early hours of Saturday.
The man suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed receiving two 999 calls to an incident in Banstead Close at around 5am.
Two ambulances and an incident support officer were sent to the scene. On arrival the crews found the stricken man.
An ambulance service spokesman said: “Medical staff immediately started resuscitation attempts. The man was taken to New Cross Hospital on blue lights with resuscitation on-going.
“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance and hospital staff it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival.”
Detectives believe trouble flared between a group of men which resulted in the victim being driven at and run over.
Officers were quizzing residents in Banstead Close, All Saints, over the weekend.
The street was sealed off following the tragedy. Also closed was Kent Road at its junction with Bradley Road and Major Street. They were due to be open again by today.
Police spokeswoman said: “As a result of the altercation, a car was driven at a 59-year-old man, during which he sustained serious injuries.
“He was taken to New Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The vehicle involved in the collision failed to stop at the scene and inquiries continue.”
The man is still due to be formally identified. A post mortem examination took place yesterday the results of which are yet to be revealed. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bilston Street police station on 0845 113 5000.
