Cleaned up for big bash

By Jasbir Authi

ONE of the great figures of Birmingham has undergone a clean-up in time for his big party.

A marble monument to Matthew Boulton, the great industrialist and founder Lunar Society member, was steam-cleaned in readiness for the 200th anniversary of his death next year.

A Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery conservation specialist cleaned the memorial in St Mary’s Church, Handsworth, which was commissioned by his son in 1810 and was made by sculptor John Flaxman.

A memorial to Boulton’s assistant, William Murdock, will also receive conservation attention.
