Elderly residents at Birmingham care home flee from fire

ELDERLY residents were evacuated after fire tore through the first floor of a Birmingham care home.

Occupants of Annand House, in Hickman Road, Sparkbrook, had already been led from the building by staff before firefighters from Highgate, Hay Mills, Aston, Bournbrook and Ladywood arrived at about 8.20am yesterday.

They spent about two hours controlling the fire.

Two residents were taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

It is thought the fire was caused by the naked flame from a candle.
