He said: “This sad loss has shocked us all. The fire service is like an extended family and our hearts and prayers go to his wife, family and loved ones as well as to his friends and colleagues.”

Although Mr Dean’s death was not thought to have been linked to the call-out, the Fire Brigades Union claimed at least 22 firefighters ahd died while on duty since 2003.

Black Country coroner Robin Balmain has been notified of the tragedy.

The fire service said it is providing help and support to Mr Dean’s family and colleagues.

Police were also called out to reports of the overturned Citroen at just after 9pm but nobody was inside.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said the incident was being treated as an act of vandalism.
