Man ‘critical’ after fire at Cheapside Apartments in Digbeth
A 22-YEAR-old man is in critical condition in hospital after suffering 65 per cent burns in a blaze at his Birmingham flat.
The cause is being treated as suspicious by the fire service who rescued the man from the top floor of the four-storey Cheapside Apartments, in Deritend, Digbeth, last night. Six fire engines turned out to the fire which engulfed the flat and is believed to have started in the lounge, at about 12.30am.
The man had been trying to tackle the blaze himself and the emergency services were alerted by neighbours who could smell smoke. The entire block was evacuated.
