Business leaders’ eleventh-hour plea for Birmingham runway extension

BUSINESS leaders from across the West Midlands have made an eleventh-hour plea for approval for the long-awaited runway extension at Birmingham International Airport.

Just hours before Solihull Council was due to meet for the crucial debate on the planning application tonight, the business community issued a unanimous appeal for the project to go ahead.

New airport boss Paul Kehoe has already said the proposed 400-metre extension could add four million passengers a year to the airport, paving the way for flights to the likes of China and the west coast of the USA.

West Midlands Business Council Executive Director James Watkins said: “With Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and other business colleagues, we have urged Solihull Council’s Planning Committee to allow the extension of the runway when they meet on Monday.

“The runway extension is critical – especially at this very difficult time in our economy.
