Birmingham marine Corporal Robert Deering killed in Afghanistan

A BIRMINGHAM Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan by an apparent booby trap while trying to help fellow soldiers following an explosion was today described as a man with a “heart of lion and the courage to match”.

Corporal Robert Christopher Deering, 33, from Sheldon, in Birmingham, died instantly in the blast in the lawless Helmand Province on Sunday.

He had been on routine patrol near Lashkar Gah when an armoured personnel carrier was damaged by an explosion, which injured three comrades.

As Solihull-born Cpl Deering approached the stricken vehicle to assess the damage there was a second blast which killed him instantly.

He was the seventh Brit to die in Afghanistan in ten days.

He had only just moved in with his fiancee, Gemma, who was described as his “best friend”.

His heartbroken parents were said to be deeply shocked. In a statement they added: “We are missing Rob deeply.”

His commanding officer, Colonel Andy Maynard, said: “Cpl Rob Deering had the heart of a lion and the courage to match.
