Blunders galore on road diversion signs in Birmingham

Coun Mike Leddy (Lab, Brandwood) said: “Following the embarrassing wrong spelling of St Philip’s on signposts you would think they would have taken extra care not to do it again. But here are two street signs, one with three spelling errors and one inaccuracy, and the other with four spelling errors and an inaccuracy.

“Does Coun Gregory wish to have my copy of the A to Z to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Cabinet member for transport Coun Gregory (Con, Billesley) said: “We have certain checking mechanisms in place but no-one is infallible.

“But if Coun Leddy is so concerned about the image this presents of Birmingham then perhaps he should have come to me, instead of raising it in public.”

Last year eagle-eyed visitors to the city centre noticed an extra L had crept into the name of St Philip’s on many road signs, but this was not the first such mistake.

Two years ago, public transport body Centro admitting wrongly spelling Stechford Lane and Burney Lane on two bus shelters at Washwood Heath.

One stop told passengers they were at the junction of Strechford Lane and Burney Lane.

Another, just yards away, said they were on Stechford Lane and Berney Lane.

And in 2005, visitors arriving at a Wyevale garden centre were left perplexed by a welcome sign which spelt Bournville in two different ways.
