Post office shooting: Shopkeepers reveal fears over security

“The last robbery was just last week when I was assaulted by two men trying to steal wine.”

She added that the business has been hit by raiders for three consecutive years – because of the location of the village.

“It is right next to the motorway and that makes it easy for robbers to get in and then make a quick getaway,” she said. “It’s not surprising the Fairfield robbery took place.

“We are a vulnerable little shop. We’re not like a big supermarket where there are lots of people around. We are continually targeted this time of year and as a result we have CCTV inside and outside the property. We also have a security guard on patrol.”

Police have taken footage from the One Stop shop in Woodrow Lane since the Fairfield incident in the hope that the culprits’ car will have been picked up on film.

They are also viewing tapes from the Spar shop in nearby Golden Cross Lane, which was targeted by a raider three months ago.

Supervisor Christine McAuley, 30, said: “One of the assistants was held at knifepoint and forced to hand over cash. It is terrifying that someone has been killed. We’ve been assigned two security guards since the shooting of Craig.”
