Arts centre gives staff chance to "upskill" - with knitting classes
STAFF at a controversial Midland arts centre which has failed to attract hordes of visitors have taken up knitting
Workers at the £61 million West Bromwich gallery The Public are perfecting their cross-stitching skills while they wait for art-lovers to call.
The centre, funded by taxpayers, is not yet fully open. But a source close to the gallery claims it is fully staffed and that these workers do not have enough to do.
Gallery bosses claim the knitting classes are a vital part of the centre’s activities and means for staff to ‘upskill’.
The source told the Sunday Mercury: “The first time I saw the knitters, I was completely bemused.
“There were between 10 and 14 members of staff - men as well as women - sitting around on settees. I asked one of them: ‘What are you doing? and was told ‘We’re upskilling.’
“I can’t believe that knitting is regarded as a staff training skill, even at a zany public arts project.
