Metal detectors on streets of Birmingham in crackdown on knife crime
Jan 31 2009 by Mark Cowan, Birmingham Mail
AIRPORT-style metal detectors will be deployed on the streets of Birmingham tonight in a fresh crack down on knife crime.
Officers in Erdington will place the archways at all entrances points to the High Street and ask workers and revellers to walk through.
It is hoped the move, one in a series of measures to boost safety in the area, will reassure the public and deter people from carrying knives.
More than 30 police officers and PCSOs will be involved in the operation, codenamed Ground, between 6pm and midnight.
The initiative forms part of the Home Office Tackling knives action programme.
