Chelmsley Wood Shopping centre tragedy ‘not suspicious’
DETECTIVES investigating the death of a man found with fatal head injuries in a Midland shopping centre are no longer treating the incident as suspicious.
The unnamed 41-year-old was found collapsed outside Specsavers in Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre, off Chelmsley Circle, by a passerby who alerted security staff shortly after midnight yesterday.
He was taken to Heartlands Hospital by ambulance but later died from his injuries.
A post mortem examination carried out yesterday afternoon revealed the man died as a result of head injuries which were consistent with a fall. His death has been referred to the Birmingham Coroner. Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre was cordoned off from staff and shoppers throughout the day, with vans and officers stationed at every entrance while detectives carried out detailed forensic work at the scene.
The shopping area has now been re-opened to the public.
The man’s family were informed of the tragedy yesterday morning and were being supported by specially trained police liaison officers. Officers at Chelmsley Wood police station said that an appeal to find a key witness who found the slumped man, had been successful.
