Charles Tandy killing: Thief ran over lecturer to avoid being caught

A THIEF at the wheel of a stolen car deliberately ran over and killed a tutor at a Birmingham training centre who was trying to stop him getting away, a court heard.

Jason Brady drove off leaving father-of-two Charles Tandy fatally injured, Birmingham Crown Court was told.

Mr Tandy, who lived in Streetly and was leader of the 2nd Streetly Scout Group, suffered multiple injuries and died in an ambulance on the way to hospital.

Brady, 28, fled to Ireland but was recently extradited back to the UK.

He has admitted unlawfully killing 56-year-old Mr Tandy, but has denied a charge of murder.

Michael Burrows QC, prosecuting, said the incident began when graduate engineer who was doing a six-month training course at the Engineering Employers Federation Technical Training Centre at Reddings Lane, Tyseley, went for a toilet break.

As he was returning to his desk, Brady passed him, carrying a bag which contained the graduate’s laptop.

The trainee challenged him and Brady ran downstairs, dropping the bag, said Mr Burrows.

The victim of the theft then shouted for help, and Mr Tandy and Mr Leslie Hillstead, who were working at the centre, ran after the defendant.
