Man dies in fall from Rotunda

Rotunda after a man fell to his death

BIRMINGHAM shoppers watched in horror as a man fell to his death from the roof of the Rotunda.

Paramedics and police raced to the scene after reports that a 24-year-old man had jumped from the roof of the 266ft tall landmark and landed on the roof of shops. West Midlands paramedics treated the man for serious injuries but he died at the scene.

West Midlands Police cordoned off the area and an investigation has begun. A spokesman said: “Police and ambulance were called at 12.22pm to reports of a man having fallen from a high level of the Rotunda.

“He was treated at the scene for serious injuries by paramedics but was pronounced dead at 12.30pm. We are not treating the death as suspicious.”

Witnesses described the scene near the Bullring. Ryan May, aged 24, a painter from Alum Rock, said: “We don’t know if he was shouting at anyone else but then all of a sudden - he jumps.

“He was on the ninth or tenth floor. We came around the corner and heard some shouting and I looked up, he jumped and then and then he was gone.

“The police got here quickly. I saw it and heard a woman crying and her kids started crying and someone started shaking their head.

“I reckon someone called the police and told them before it happened. There is no way they could have got there that quick.

“When I saw it, I just had to turn away.
