Man dies in fall from Rotunda
“I asked the emergency crew if he was dead and they said yes. One looked as white as a sheet and she was crying in the ambulance.”
Sophie Wright, aged 20, a charity worker from Acocks Green, said: “You’ve got to think of his family. It’s shocking, it makes you think that someone’s gone just like that.
“It’s really, really sad. I know it sounds mad but it’s like the day Diana died, it will stay with me forever. It just makes you think what could have made him do it?”
Andy Derrick was shopping in town when he came across the grim scene. Mr Derrick, a musician aged 37, from Bearwood, said: “About 12.45pm, I came out from the Bullring and there were a couple of vans and ambulances. A couple of police officers were standing by the entrance to the Rotunda at street level.
“It’s quite upsetting because this is Birmingham’s landmark and it has been renovated and people have moved in. I feel sorry for the person who has done that. They must have been in hell.”
A West Midlands Ambulance spokeswoman said: “On arrival, crews found a man on a second floor grass terrace. The man had suffered fatal injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene.”
The Grade II listed building is 81 metres tall and was completed in 1965. The building was officially reopened in May 2008, following a refurbishment by Urban Splash when serviced apartments were added on 19th and 20th floors.
