Birmingham Morris Men step up recruitment drive

MORRIS Dancers in Birmingham strutted their stuff to try and entice more men to take up the hobby.

The sessions were held by the Green Man Morris and Sword club at Handsworth Library on Saturday.

Michael Spencer, 28, from the club said it was organised in the hope that more people would join in with the new trend.

A documentary-style comedy Morris: A Life With Bells On, which follows the fortunes of a group of dancers has already attracted internet attention.

Now Michael is hoping it will have spurred a few men onto taking up the hobby. He said: “We are lacking a few younger members so that is why we decided to hold the sessions at the library.

“Some people may have seen the film – it’s attracting a lot of attention, and will hopefully make Morris Dancing more appealing to a wider range of people.”
