Thousands of jobs at risk at LDV
One worker, who asked not to be named, said: “The rumour is that the business could be gone by Friday, but I must stress it is a rumour.
“None of us really know what is going on.”
No-one was immediately available for further comment from the company today.
LDV has not produced a van for nearly three months after stopping production on December 12 following a drastic 50 per cent slump in deamnd in the commercial vehicle market.
Around 700 production workers have been laid off from manufacturing - and now face statutory lay-off payments after the banked hours system operated at the plant ran its course.
The Washwood Heath factory employs around 900 workers, supporting a dealer network of 1,200 jobs and more than 5,000 supply chain jobs.
LDV is said to be seeking a bridging loan of over £20 million to help it survive the short-term crisis caused by the downturn in customer demand.
If the management buyout is completed, the firm would become Europe’s first green van operation, pioneering volume production of electric vans.
