CAMPAIGNERS demanding the secure future of decent jobs for working people today lined the road outside the Birmingham LDV plant in support its staff.

New protest group, Put People First, chose to launch its first ever demonstration outside the gates of the Washwood Heath van-maker.

With 900 jobs currently at risk, and rumours circulating that the firm may close as early as Friday, the small group of hardy protestors received a warm welcome.

Staff beeped their horns and flashed their lights in support of the gesture of solidarity.

The campaign group, which is backed by Unison and the TUC, handed out 2,000 leaflets and unveiled a banner demanding “Justice for jobs”.

Organiser Simon Furze said: “Workers here are on the sharp edge of the recession and they are really feeling the pressure right now.

“We are here to campaign for all working people regardless of where they are from.
