He said: “This is a significant investment during the economic downturn from a part of the world where there is the capital, liquidity and wealth.
“This is a strategically-important development for the city centre. Until now regeneration has not flowed from the Bullring down Digbeth. It has been like falling off a cliff.”
He said that it would create 2,600 jobs and that the design reflects its location at the most historic part of the city.
He added that even though the tower is outside the city centre tall building zone, this could be ignored in exceptional circumstances. This fits in with aims of the new Big City Plan to break the restrictions of the old concrete collar.
Two minor concerns were that there is not enough car parking provided and that the tower might cast an unwelcome shadow on St Martin’s Church. They have demanded more details at the full planning application stage.
Beorma Quarter spokesman Mark Betteridge said: “The response was very encouraging.
“The committee appreciated that this is a pacesetting development.”
