Protesters call for Birmingham tower blocks to be demolished

The MP claimed that to rub salt into the wound, the council had wasted more than £1million on keeping the empty blocks secure – “the same amount it would have cost to knock them down”.
Mr Byrne added: “We pledge to carry this fight on until the blocks are blown up. We want nice homes for local families to live in.”
Local campaigner, Marie Phipps, said: “We have just had enough. Four years ago we were told the towers were in poor condition and would not be cost effective to repair. Nothing has changed.”
