Man dragged 30ft to his death by speeding car in Perry Barr

A MIDLAND man died after he was dragged more than 30ft by a speeding driver in an early morning hit and run.

Matthew Whitehead, from Kingstanding, Birmingham, was struck by a car as he crossed a city centre dual carriageway at 12.05am on Saturday.

The 21-year-old had been walking across the Aldridge Road, in Perry Barr, when a dark-coloured car smashed into him before tearing away.

His friends have claimed that he was dragged more than 30ft by the car – and police are to scour CCTV film footage in an attempt to trace the driver.

Ali Naveed, who works at the Pizza Pan restaurant just yards from where Matthew was knocked down, was working at the time of the crash.

“We just heard the noise,” he told the Sunday Mercury. “Then his friend came running in, looking very scared. I asked him what was wrong. He told me his friend had been knocked down.

“The car carried him down the street to where he ended up, I think both his legs were broken in two places.”

Former school friend John Powell, 21, from Sutton Coldfield, remembered the quiet youngster as he laid flowers at the scene yesterday afternoon.

“He was one of our group of friends,” he said. “He got a bit of stick from some people because he was one of the quieter ones.
