Man dragged 30ft to his death by speeding car in Perry Barr

“Most of the time he was at the back of things – I can’t believe this has happened to him.”

Last night, sources close to the family said the youngster’s parents were “inconsolable”. When the Sunday Mercury called at their home, there was no answer.

West Midlands Ambulance Service attended the incident. A spokeswoman said: “Crews arrived to find a man who was unconscious on the road. He had suffered serious multiple injuries.

“Crews commenced emergency treatment and immobilised the man before he was transferred by ambulance on blue lights to Selly Oak Hospital.

“Medics were on standby awaiting the arrival of the man, who was in a serious condition.”

Despite the efforts of the emergency team at the hospital, Matthew died shortly after he arrived.

Police are now hunting the mystery car and have asked businesses next to the Aldridge Road to hand over their CCTV tapes.

Last night, a police spokesman said: “Officers were called to Aldridge Road, Perry Barr, at around 12.05am.

“A dark-coloured car was in collision with a male pedestrian, on the intercity carriageway, near to the junction of Aldridge Road and Church Road.

“The pedestrian, a 21 year-old man from Kingstanding, later died in hospital.”

Anyone with information should contact the road policing unit at Nechells Green police station on 0845 113 5000.
