Birmingham Children's Hospital chief executive quits ahead of probe report

THE under-fire boss of Birmingham Children’s Hospital has resigned days before the results of a high-profile investigation into medical standards at the Trust is revealed.

Paul O’Connor, chief executive of the Steelhouse Lane hospital, quit at the weekend, ahead of the results of an inquiry into allegations of mismanagement which is due this week.

The independent watchdog The Healthcare Commission was called in by Health Secretary Alan Johnson to carry out an extensive review into the Trust following complaints by visiting surgeons from neighbouring Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Edgbaston.

Mr O’Connor could not be contacted for comment today, but has always claimed many of the complaints were “unfounded rumours” and the independent report would put the public’s mind at rest.

Joanna Davis, chairman of the NHS Trust, said: “Mr O’Connor tendered his resignation with immediate effect and was not removed from his position.”

She would not comment further but has sent out an email to all hospital staff telling them to expect the report findings shortly.
