King’s Norton residents protest after land owner axes woodland trees

But Raymond Hudson, of Green Acres Road, said: “It’s a lovely wood with badgers and bats. We want to form a committee to try to stop it all.”

Dr Lynne Jones MP (Lab Selly Oak) is backing the campaign to save the beauty spot and has applied for a Tree Protection Order from Natural England to save the remaining trees.

“I don’t think we have many little oases in the city,” she said. “A lot of the public open space is fairly sterile but this is oak woodland which harbours a lot of interesting wildlife.

“Areas like this need to be preserved.”

Sid Smith, who lives in Green Acres Road with wife Sheila, said: “We’ve been here 25 years and these trees were here when it all used to be farmland.

“When we first moved here we used to get cows coming right up to the back garden.

“It’s not only the view from our garden but all the habitats which will be destroyed if this development goes ahead.”
