Number of Midlands children feeling suicidal soars says Childline

“Children can hide their distress so effectively that parents may have no idea their child is suicidal. We want parents to be given guidance on how to spot possible signs.

“We strongly urge any child who feels suicidal to call ChildLine. Or they could speak to a trusted adult such as their teacher or doctor.

“Every child deserves a happy childhood and the chance to grow and experience a full life. It is vital that children get the support they need.”

Claire said signs a child is feeling suicidal could include them dwelling on an insoluble problem or giving away possessions.

Children might even talk about methods of suicide and research of these, or drop hints they will not be around. Other signs are changes in behaviour – a child might be withdrawn or suddenly cheerful after feeling despairing because they have made a decision to end their life.

Strong emotions might even manifest themselves in physical symptoms such as headaches or tiredness. Self harming can also lead to suicidal tendencies.
