Sir Patrick Moore tells Birmingham: Aliens will be found soon

Patrick Moore

Legendary astronomer Sir Patrick Moore is sure we are not alone....

The country’s favourite stargazer – who was speaking in Birmingham – is confident that we will discover life on other worlds within the next decade.

And he expects ET will be a galactic stone’s throw away, living happily on Mars.

Sir Patrick, who just celebrated his 86th birthday, was his usual enthusiastic self when he visited the BBC at the Mailbox.

The studios produce The Sky at Night, the longest-running programme with the same presenter in TV history.

And, of course, that presenter is the great man himself.

But it is not the past but the future that really excites Sir Patrick the most.

Earlier this year NASA launched the Kepler satellite with the task of scanning the cosmos to track down planets just like Earth.

Sir Patrick is certain it will do just that.

“We are looking for life really,’’ he said.

‘‘One thing we don’t know is if there are many worlds where life can exist, or will do so. That’s what we haven’t proved.

“It may be Mars. If there is any trace of life on Mars that’s not Earth contamination, this would show life is widespread.
