Sir Patrick Moore tells Birmingham: Aliens will be found soon
“I am sure it is but I can’t prove it. Ask me in another 10 years and I may be able to tell you the answer!”
It was back in April 1957 that The Sky at Night started and Sir Patrick is delighted by its longevity.
“I knew nothing about television then, I was completely in the dark.” he said.
‘‘But everything was black and white back then and everything was live, which could lead to disaster on occasion.’’
Those early days on The Sky at Night were amazing times. The Russians launched Sputnik – the first ever satellite – just a few months after the first programme was aired.
This sparked the space race between the Soviets and Americans with the ultimate prize being a man on the moon, a race won by the US when Apollo XI touched down 40 years ago this year.
