Dad in carjack terror at Star City
Mar 31 2009 by Mark Cowan, Birmingham Mail
Mr Mullen added: “It really was a terrifying experience. It’s a mixture of feeling frightening and thinking about what could have happened. I’m just relieved that we all got out okay.
“It was all over in a flash. Afterwards you think about having a go at these people, but it’s really pointless. Nothing else really mattered other than my family. I feel we had a lucky escape.”
It is possible that the gang had been waiting for Mr Mullen after spotting the car in the car park.
A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “A black coloured car intentionally collided into the rear of his vehicle. Three men, all in black hooded tops made off in the Mitsubishi Evo which was later recovered in the Handsworth area. Police inquiries continue.
“The risk of someone being carjacked in the West Midlands is extremely slim, however it can happen.
“There is no need for alarm but if people are aware of how carjackers and opportunistic thieves operate, what they are looking for, plus some basic crime prevention measures, they can help to reduce the risk.”
Witnesses or anyone with information should call CID at Queens Road police station on 0845 113 5000.
POLICE have issued some basic safety advice to motorists to beat the carjackers.
• If you are bumped in a suspicious way, do not leave your car. Lock the doors and drive to the nearest police station.
• Never leave the keys in the ignition when leaving your car to pay for petrol or get a ticket to park.
• Be alert when outside, consider who is around you and where your keys are.
• Don’t have your keys on view when going to the bank or paying for petrol.
• Be aware of other cars around you. Never stop too near the car in front.
• Before getting out of your car, check your surroundings, wherever you are. If you feel uneasy do not park, drive off.
• Use your common sense. Different circumstances will mean different reactions, but do not put yourself in danger, trust your instincts.
