Chester Road crash: Paramedic critically ill

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Before the collision, a police vehicle attending the scene of a burglary had spotted the van being driven along the Chester Road and had turned around to follow it.

“An officer in a second police vehicle, which was passing the scene at the time of the collision, was able to provide immediate first aid.”

Firefighters said the ambulance collided with a white Mercedes van and then hit the car park wall at a McDonald’s restaurant.

Fire crews attended, along with police and further ambulance crews and part of the road was sealed off for several hours.

The driver of the transit van was believed to have been uninjured and was today helping police with inquiries.

Daniel Gore, Assistant Chief Officer for Birmingham and the Black Country, said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with our two members of staff and their families.

“Colleagues and local managers and staff from the ambulance station where the two staff are based are at the hospital, providing comfort and support during this difficult time.”

* Police appealed for witnesses to contact CID at Sutton Coldfield police station on 0845 1135000.
