Ram-raiders fail in cashpoint robbery at Nationwide in Small Heath

An overnight raid on the Nationwide Building Society's branch in Coventry Road in Bordesley.

A GANG of ‘hole in the wall’ thieves used a stolen digger in a bid to smash a cashpoint machine from outside a Birmingham building society today.

The ram-raiders drove the excavator into the side of the Small Heath branch of Nationwide.

But their ‘smash-and-grab’ technique was thwarted and the two thieves were thought to have fled empty-handed in a getaway car at about 2.45am.

They left behind the digger, believed to have been swiped from a nearby building site, and a potential wealth of forensic evidence.

The damage to the building on Coventry Road could be clearly seen as police and crime scene experts combed the area for crucial clues they hoped could lead to the identity of the thieves.

“Officers are appealing for witnesses to an incident in which offenders rammed a mechanical digger into the wall of a building society,” a West Midlands Police spokesman said.
