Coseley swimming pool gas leak: Neighbours shocked

Mr Clark said: “The emergency services were covering them in foil blankets to keep them warm. The baths have been neglected over the years.”

Claire Wilson, 24, who lives in nearby Causeway Road, was relieved she had not taken her sons James, three, and Dylan, one, to the baths. She said: “We were upset about it, and I think it means the baths will probably close now. We go there twice a month.

“I was worried about all the children there yesterday because there were a lot of them. It was opened free to children for the day.”

Gerry Clarke, 70, and his wife Phyllis, 63, of Fountain Lane, have been involved in a campaign to save the baths.

“We are concerned that this was a problem that maybe could have been avoided,” he said.

A woman who lives opposite the baths but who did not wish to be named, said: “We heard screaming and saw kids outside the baths with foil wrapped round them.”

She was relieved that she had told her 11-year-old daughter, who had asked to go to the baths yesterday morning, that she could not go until the next day.
