Spaghetti Junction could be seen from outer space

How Spaghetti Junction could look if it becomes lit up as Clive Dutton has suggested

IT SEEMS like the sky’s no limit for one of Birmingham’s famous landmarks.

Clive Dutton, Birmingham City Council’s head of planning and regeneration, has said he would like to light up the Spaghetti Junction interchange at night so it could be viewed from outer space.

Mr Dutton believes illuminating all of the 400 columns would make the structure as instantly recognisable as the Great Wall of China.

He said: “It’s about Birmingham punching above its weight on the world stage and being instantly identified.

“The Eiffel Tower, the Great of China, the Empire State Building, the Taj Mahal are all illuminated so why shouldn’t Spaghetti Junction?

“There are 400 columns supporting it which could be lit up.”

Mr Dutton said the plans were in the “embryonic stages” and further details would come to light in the following months.

Birmingham is currently undergoing a £6 billion regeneration programme, which includes a £193 million plan to build Europe’s biggest library, a super-hospital and improve the city’s universities.
