Swine flu infected on same Birmingham Airport flight

THREE of the British people confirmed as having swine flu were today reported to have arrived back in the UK on the same flight into Birmingham International Airport.

A 12-year-old girl from Devon was on the same plane from Cancun as honeymoon couple Dawn and Iain Askham, the couple from Polmont, near Falkirk in Scotland.

It was not immediately clear if two other people confirmed as having swine flu, a 41-year-old woman from Redditch, or a man from Barnet, north London, were on the same flight, but both also recently returned from Mexico.

In the UK more than 70 people are now being tested for swine flu. Yesterday there were 20 possible cases in Wales and 32 in Scotland.

Today hospitals in the West Midlands were bracing themselves for a potential flu pandemic.

The UK will see “many more cases” of swine flu as the virus spreads but most people will make a good recovery, the Government’s Chief Medical Officer said today.

Professor Sir Liam Donaldson said he was “concerned but not alarmed” after the World Health Organisation (WHO) raised the alert level to phase five of six.
