Birmingham Council hunts man who has run up £11,000 in parking fines
A SERIAL illegal parker has run up an incredible £11,000 worth of fines, after being handed 122 tickets.
Traffic wardens have penalised the driver after he illegally left his vehicle in 11 streets in Birmingham.
Yet Birmingham City Council has refused to release the motorist’s identity, or the make of his vehicle, because officials fear it may breach his human rights. The penalty charges stretch back to 2006, with the latest one being issued in January.
And the motorist has refused to pay them, prompting Birmingham City Council to pursue the driver using bailiffs and the courts.
The streets where the careless driver has parked his car illegally are Granville Street, Thorp Street, Hurst Street, Warstone Lane, Aston Street, Station Street, Bath Passage, Augusta Street, Swallow Street, Bromsgrove Street, Kingston Row.
The local authority passed the debt to a recovery firm when the driver failed to cough up.
“Since April 1, 2006 to January 28, 2009, the most unpaid fines issued to one vehicle is 122,” a council spokesman said. They owe £11,305 which is being pursued via bailiff recovery action. When someone does not pay their penalty charge notice, the statutory process for recovery is followed. We are committed to tracking down persistent evaders and use all the powers available to us, which includes working in partnership with the DVLA, reporting untaxed vehicles and vehicle removals.”
The huge fine came to light after a Freedom of Information request made to Birmingham City Council.
The spokesman added: “Under the Freedom of Information Act, the personal details could make the motorist identifiable and the data is therefore exempt from publication.”
