The prospect of hundreds of LDV workers being thrown on to the dole queue was heightened after Jobcentre Plus also confirmed that many employees could now be eligible for state benefits.
A statement said: “Jobcentre Plus is reminding employees who are currently not working that they may be able to make a claim for Jobseeker’s Allowance during their current lay-off period. This can be done by contacting the Jobcentre Plus LDV claims hotline at 0121 253 3950.”
LDV, which has not produced a single van since December 12, has been on the brink for more than two months after GAZ announced in late February it was in talks to sell the company for a management buyout, but a deal has not been concluded.
