Three of the UK’s previous confirmed swine flu cases are known to have arrived in Birmingham on flights from Mexico, including Britain’s first swine flu victims, newlyweds Iain and Dawn Askham from Scotland.
And another confirmed case involved a man who caught a flight from Birmingham to Glasgow on April 30 after previously flying in to Birmingham from the US three days earlier. No details of his movements while in Birmingham have emerged.
But health officials in Scotland have revealed that they have now traced the “vast majority” of passengers who were in close contact with the infected man on Flybe flight BE7096 to Glasgow.
Health Protection Scotland appealed for the 52 passengers to contact the NHS after revealing that they and the four crew on board may be at “low risk” of infection with the H1N1 virus.
A Health Protection Scotland spokesman said yesterday: “We would ask that other passengers come forward and contact NHS 24 so they can be risk assessed as a precaution.” A spokesman for Birmingham airport said the Health Protection Agency would be checking passengers returning from Cancun today. “Passengers will be brought in to a different arrivals hall so they can be better assessed.”
