Hall Green man dies in police car chase in Birmingham

A spokesman said: “Attempts were made to resuscitate the driver of one of the cars while he was being taken on blue lights to City Hospital, but despite the best efforts of staff, he couldn’t be saved and he was confirmed dead at hospital.

“An occupant from the other vehicle involved - a man with a head injury - a was taken to Selly Oak Hospital.”

The road was closed for nine hours while investigators examined the crash scene outside the officers of the Birmingham Chamber of commerce and Industry.

It was re-opened shortly before 7am today. Shards of glass could be seen on the pavement at the junction.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Officers are appealing for witnesses and want to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident to come forward and contact us on 0845 113 5000.

“The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as police officers attempted to stop one of the vehicles shortly before the collision occurred.”

The force introduced new procedures to end high-speed chases and use helicopters more often in the wake of the death of Neil Homer in December 1995.

Neil was killed at the junction of Causeway Green Road and Wolverhampton Road, Oldbury, when his Vauxhall Nova was struck by a police car pursuing a stolen vehicle.

PC Robert Dallow, 41, also died in the high speed collision. PC Lezlie Collins, served six weeks of a three-month jail sentence after being found guilty of causing the two deaths by dangerous driving.
