Motorist trapped in M5 crash

AN ELDERLY woman was fighting for her life today after her car overturned on an M5 slip road at West Bromwich.

The woman, in her 70s, was trapped in her Ford Fusion hatchback as she was leaving the motorway at the northbound Junction 1 exit, just after 9.30pm yesterday.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the victim had suffered a heart attack but it was unclear whether this had happened before or after the accident, which closed the junction for three hours.

The woman was taken to Sandwell General Hospital in a critical condition.

Watch Commander Adrian Cherry, of West Bromwich fire station, said: “We believe the car hit the kerb and flipped on to its roof.

“Ambulance personnel were working on the lady for half an hour before they took her to hospital.”

A second person in the car was not hurt.

A Central Motorway Police Group spokesman said the cause of the accident was being investigated, with the help of specialist officers from West Midlands Police.
