Police swoop on Birmingham's rogue builders

POLICE today swooped on homes across Birmingham as part of an investigation into rogue builders suspected of ripping off a pensioner to the tune of more than £300,000.

Detectives said since last August the 79-year-old widower, a former firefighter from Yardley, paid out his life savings for roofing work that should have only cost £20,000.

Today officers swooped on five homes across the city targeting the gang of builders.

At one address in Kitts Green, a 43-year-old man suspected of being the boss of the firm, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud after police smashed their way into his home.

A Mercedes car parked on the driveway was also due to be seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

At least three other people were arrested in raids in Sheldon, Chelmsley Wood and Stechford.
