IT WAS an emotional farewell for Birmingham’s outgoing Lord Mayor Chauhdry Rashid and a warm welcome to his replacement Councillor Michael Wilkes at one of the city’s most prestigious civic bashes.

The Lord Mayor’s Family Show saw hundreds of people descend on the city centre to take part in the Young Readers Book Bash, military assault courses and music competitions.

And while the hustle and bustle continued on the streets of the city, families looking for a more relaxed way to celebrate Birmingham’s figurehead treated themselves to tea and cake with the Mayor at the Council House.

The family day out raised thousands of pounds for the Lord Mayor’s Charities.

These included the Al Hijrah Trust UK, Birmingham Arthritis Resource Centre, Kidney disease and SLE Research Fund at the QE Hospital and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers.

The incoming Lord Mayor, Michael Wilkes, said: “I am deeply honoured to be Lord Mayor of Birmingham, also my wife Vivienne, who will be Lady Mayoress.
