Jacqui Smith is to quit as Home Secretary
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith joined MPs engulfed by the expenses scandal today as it was confirmed that it has forced her out of the Cabinet.
Sources close to her said she was so hurt by revelations, including the humiliation of repaying £10 her husband claimed for watching two adult films, that she told Premier Gordon Brown two months ago that she wanted to quit.
She will now leave the Government in the Whitehall shake-up expected within days - as the reshuffle appeared to be spiralling out of Mr Brown's control.
Earlier, Children's Minister Beverley Hughes revealed she also told the Prime Minister she wanted to leave the Government for personal and family reasons.
A source close to Ms Smith said: "She's been hurt by what's gone on and it's been a difficult couple of months for her."
Ms Smith was due to appear in the Commons this afternoon, opening a debate on the Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Bill.
Sources close to the Home Secretary said she is determined to fight her Redditch seat at the next election, where she is defending a majority of just 2,716.
Confirmation that she will quit the Cabinet came as another Labour MP announced he was standing down after uproar over his expenses claims of almost £13,000 towards a mortgage that did not exist.
David Chaytor, MP for Bury North, said he made the decision to leave Parliament at the next general election after weekend talks with senior party officials and his constituency party.
He had already been suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party and faced the humiliation of being de-selected as a candidate after a forthcoming "star chamber" inquiry.
