Erdington school to open sexual health centre

A Birmingham school and sixth form college is to open its own sexual health centre in an effort to cut teenage pregnancies.

Schools secretary Ed Balls announced plans to build a youth centre offering “a full range of sexual health services” alongside Stockland Green Technology College, in Erdington.

The Government is providing £5 million towards the cost of the clinic, which will be part of a new “education village” to be created as part of a major refurbishment programme.

It was one of 101 projects announced by the Government to turn schools into community facilities which provide a wide range of services.

A total of £200 million is being provided for schemes across the country.

A school in Coventry is to get a new early-learning centre, while a school in Worcester will receive cash to refurbish an existing youth centre.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families said the Erdington school would receive funding for a new young people’s centre which “will provide a flagship facility delivering a full range of sexual health services, innovative provision for children with autism and their families, an informal setting providing information, advice and guidance on a wide range of issues, and space for professionals from a range of agencies including the Speech, Language and Therapy Service, Youth Service, Connexions and Youth Offending Team.”
