Swine Flu: First Birmingham secondary school closes
A spokesman for the agency defended the current swabbing process, and said children and adults who had not contracted the virus should not be given drugs unnecessarily.
Yesterday it emerged that a new mother who gave birth prematurely became the UK’s first patient to die while suffering from swine flu.
Jacqui Fleming, aged 38, who had underlying health problems, died in hospital in Scotland as another 109 cases of swine flu were confirmed by the Health Protection Agency in the West Midlands over the weekend.
Ms Fleming, from Glasgow, gave birth almost three months early about a fortnight ago at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.
It is understood her child, which was born at 29 weeks, does not have swine flu.
Ms Fleming’s death was the first to be reported outside the Americas, where there have been at least 145 fatalities from the virus.
