Rainbow pub in Digbeth hit with noise order

The landlord of Birmingham’s Rainbow Pub has lashed out at the city council’s decision to serve a noise abatement order despite his pledge to invest thousands of pounds to soundproof the venue.

The established Digbeth music venue has been at the centre of a storm over noise reaching nearby newly-built flats, an issue which has sparked furious debate among the city’s music fans.

The Rainbow landlord Kent Davis said he had received a phone call from Birmingham City Council’s Environmental Protection Unit telling him they had decided to serve the venue with a noise abatement order.

In a further blow to the venue, the pub’s owners have also been forced to close down its sister venue, the Rainbow Warehouse, for a week for staff retraining after police found underage drinking at an event last year.

At a licensing review held yesterday police told how they found several girls, aged between 16 and 18, leaving the venue and stumbling around drunk in the street.

As well as the seven-day suspension of the licence, Birmingham City Council’s licencing sub-committee also banned all under-18s from any future licenced event on the premises and imposed other conditions which include tightening up the CCTV system.

The Rainbow’s noise abatement order follows several months of discussions with the council which have seen the pub sign an undertaking to limit volumes and promise to spend £30,000 to £40,000 on building a roof over its courtyard to stop noise escaping from the venue.
