Police seize £170,000 Ferrari in Birmingham

When the driver, a man in his mid 30s, failed to produce insurance documents, it was impounded.

As the red Ferrari soft-top, now worth an estimated £90,000, was lifted onto a lorry, the driver was arrested on unrelated matters.

Two weeks ago, they same team seized a Porsche Boxster and a Mercedes in a similar blitz that was part of the month-long crime crackdown codenamed Operation Nemesis.

“Ordinarily, you would think people with cars that valuable would have them insured, so it’s a bit of a surprise there are some out there who will take the risk of not insuring them,” said Sgt Shams.

“It shows the power of technology that we have to make the area safer.”

Drivers can only get their cars back once they produce valid insurance documents and pay the release fees. They will also be prosecuted for driving offences.

A total of 15 other cars were seized in the operation over insurance matters.

Among the famous Ferrari 430 drivers are the Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o and England forward Jermain Defoe.

According to police figures, the high-tech ANPR system has helped take more than 52,000 cars off West Midlands roads in four years.

It has helped catch drug dealers and armed robbers. Last December stunned police found a man with a gun tucked in the waistband of his trousers and another man with loaded pistol in his car during a blitz on criminals driving through Birmingham.
