Three face retrial over riot murder
Three Birmingham men will face a retrial for the murder of an IT worker during riots in 2005 after a jury failed to reach a verdict, a judge said.
Waqar Ahmed, Azhil Khan and Afzal Khan, all from Handsworth, denied murdering Isaiah Young-Sam and wounding another man in the Lozells area of the city.
Jurors at Birmingham Crown Court, who heard more than two weeks of evidence about the stabbing of Mr Young-Sam, deliberated for a period spanning five days but were unable to reach either a unanimous or majority verdict on any count.
Mr Justice Holroyde discharged the panel last Wednesday after its foreman confirmed there was no realistic prospect of verdicts being reached if further deliberation took place.
Ahmed, 29, and his co-defendants, both 26, were remanded in custody and will reappear at the same court for retrial on January 28, 2010.
