Policing plea from Bishop Derek Webley

“We will do everything we can to make certain we are listening to our communities.”

The 47-year-old bishop, who is married with three children and has received an MBE for services to community relations in the city, said he also intended to continue giving sermons during his time in the role.

He said: “I’m aware that people of colour have greater expectations placed on them.

“I recognise that wherever you are, you’ve got to remember your heritage. No matter what doors open, or what opportunities, you must remember your beginnings.

“I’m not doing this on my own, I have 16 other members of the authority and the authority works with partners. We can all do this together.”

The Rt Rev Webley has led several anti-gun campaigns in the wake of the Aston New Year shootings of Letisha Shakespeare and Charlene Ellis, and also played a key role in helping to calm the community after the recent disturbances in Lozells.
